01

I design systems that outlive their first version.

Enterprise systems rarely fail because of weak technology. They fail because architecture, product thinking, cost discipline, and user experience are disconnected.

I translate business strategy into platform architecture — cloud-native, AI-ready, and financially accountable — that scales with structural clarity, not accumulated complexity.

Twenty-two years of that work has been techno-functional rather than purely technical: I carry the business case as well as the design. My practice sits across four axes:

  • Architecture & strategy — target-state design, modernization roadmaps, trade-off and risk assessment
  • Cloud & platform — Azure and AWS, Kubernetes, microservices, event-driven integration
  • Business & value — cloud economics, cost governance, customer discovery translated into architecture
  • AI enablement — enterprise-safe LLM tooling, RAG and vector search, agents, AI governance

I work at the system level — not the feature level.

02

What I own

Legacy Modernization & Cloud Migration

When cloud costs rise and delivery velocity slows, architecture is usually the root cause. I run modernization end to end — from the business case that gets it funded through to the services in production.

  • Build the re-architecture proposal and carry it through stakeholder approval
  • Define target-state architecture and the sequencing to reach it
  • Decompose monoliths into microservices ecosystems without stalling the roadmap
  • Design Kubernetes-native CI/CD automation frameworks
  • Improve observability, scalability, resilience, and compliance posture

At NielsenIQ this meant a 15-year monolith re-architected and migrated to Azure in eight months, with the first new services live in six — and CI/CD driven to 100% platform coverage on containerized Kubernetes pipelines, migrating Jenkins to GitHub Actions.

Cloud Economics & Cost Governance

Infrastructure spend is an architecture output, not a procurement problem. I treat it as a design constraint with a business case attached.

  • Model cloud economics and build the case for structural change
  • Establish FinOps and cloud cost governance operating models
  • Right-size through re-architecture rather than through deferral
  • Hold the savings with governance that survives the next roadmap cycle

Executed in two phases at NielsenIQ: on-prem to cloud removed 20% of infrastructure cost; a subsequent VM-to-AKS migration removed a further 27% — roughly 47% in total over two years.

AI Enablement

AI should be infrastructure — not decoration. My current work makes it safe to adopt at organizational scale.

  • Enterprise-safe, self-hosted LLM tooling and LLM-assisted engineering workflows
  • RAG and vector search architectures; AI agents and reusable AI artifacts
  • Architecture Assessment Automation platforms
  • AI-driven manufacturing and operational analytics
  • GitHub Copilot enablement scaled across engineering teams

I sit on the NIQ AI & Cybersecurity Governance Committee as an elected member, setting organization-wide standards for how AI is built and adopted.

Architecture Governance & Assurance

Governance earns its keep when it accelerates delivery instead of taxing it.

  • Serve as platform architecture authority to the Cybersecurity & Architecture Review Board
  • Establish architecture review frameworks and trade-off records
  • Hold CIS-16, HIPAA, and GDPR compliance across every release
  • Run build-vs-buy evaluation, vendor selection, and commercial negotiation
  • Prevent technical debt from hardening into structural drag

What I carry that most architects don’t

Most architects specialise in either architecture, product, or experience. My path ran through all three — and through running a business that had to survive its own delivery decisions.

  • Founder and operator — built a 50-person digital services practice over 11 years and led it through acquisition
  • Commercial instinct — business cases, build-vs-buy, vendor negotiation, and delivery accountability for enterprise accounts
  • Design origin — Creative Director for five years before architecture; award-winning UX still in my own hands
  • Both operating modes — startup velocity and enterprise governance, without mistaking one for the other
  • Still builds — a full-stack engineering background (MERN, TypeScript) behind the architecture diagrams

That combination is why I can diagnose systemic problems quickly: I have sat on every side of the table where the problem was created. The result is architecture that is technically sound, commercially defensible, and experientially coherent.

Principles I design by:

Architect information, not just interfaces
Reduce friction before adding features
Design for cognition, not aesthetics
Build reusable systems, not isolated screens
Align user journeys with measurable business outcomes

A technically scalable system that fails experientially is still broken.

A personal note

I am deeply curious about how systems behave — technical systems, organisational systems, and human systems.

Durable platforms emerge when engineering rigour, product clarity, and human-centred design are treated as one discipline — not separate departments.

Away from the day job, I explore AI-native tooling and architecture automation — the systems that reduce engineering cognitive load rather than add to it. Some of that thinking ends up in writing.
